empty hook and finding bait under root

I was in crystal clear water. Fishing with a pole which had an empty hook. There was a float a few inches above the hook. As I dropped the hook into the water, I saw a large black and white fish would nibble at the hook but not take it. There were 2 smaller silver fish which had yellow tails swimming around the hook as well.
I knew I needed bait so I looked over at the bank of the water and saw a tree right on the bank. I went over to the tree and saw some roots sticking up out of the ground. I got on my hands and knees and grabbed the roots with my bare hands and pulled them back and saw a large worm. I grabbed it and pulled it out of the ground before it went deeper. I put it on the hook and was heading back over to the water to catch that large fish.
