Question for Kitt - the name Michael

Post by Elle »

Hi Kitt,

I was just reading something you wrote on another post. I was wondering if you could help me?

My understanding is that the name Michael, in Hebrew, means 'Who is like God?'.

Could you confirm that?

Wondering why the question mark. And even why the Archangel Michael would be named that?

Any ideas?

Much appreciated.

Shalom Elle,

Yes, the name Michael מִיכָאֵל means Who is Like Elohim? The question mark exists only in English or any other language that has an interrogatory punctuation mark because it literally is a question. The question mark does not exist in ancient scriptural Hebrew there is very little in the way of punctuation.

Michael, (the English word) is the representative of Elohim. The Hebrew word mal'akh (מַלְאַךְ) is the word that is erroneously translated as angel and means representative or messenger.

Michael is the representative of Elohim who stands over and delivers the Jewish people. This comes from Daniel 12:1. Substitute the term Who is like Elohim for Michael in the scripture and you will get the picture.

Dan 12:1 “Now at that time Miḵa’ĕl shall stand up, the great head who is standing over the sons of your people. And there shall be a time of distress, such as never was since there was a nation, until that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, every one who is found written in the book,

Yahveh commands the deliverance of his people using what ever tool He desires or commands. Who is like Elohim?

I hope that this answers your question.

Shalom,

Kitt Schilke

ps. There are times where I go for months between my visits to this board. The best way to ask me a question is to send a PM because I get notice of PMs and responses to my posts. A question like this can then be posted on the main board.
